Civilization & Its Discontents | Sigmund Freud

Our Sunday Reading List comes from the Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, once considered and still considered, for many a reasons, the most scandalous man to have taken to the pen.

We bring to you his seminal essay, Civilization and Its Discontents, which stemmed from his observations and thoughts on the First World War, an in-depth analysis of the individual’s conflict with the world, or to be specific, the civilization. How the dynamics between an individual and the civilization actually works, the moral restraints, the freedom and the breaking points. This is one of Freud’s rare works as he explores human psychology at a macro level, although not in isolation from the individual’s mind.
